Dong Xianliang (Dong Yan), researcher and theatre practitioner, was trained in the fields of history, literature, cultural studies and performing arts. He received his Doctoral degree in Chinese and History from the City University of Hong Kong.

Dong contemplates the relationship between the body and language with the means of writing, theatre practice, and educational projects of local institutions. He has led and participated in projects on re-writing history from the perspectives of the body, material, technology, and medical care; approaches to dance dramaturgy and archival; the usual and unusual of the language and the body.
